Infinix Zero 6 Review

The Zero line has always been the Flagship-grade series of Infinix Mobile. Last year’s Zero 5 was such a great device. Optical Zoom, USB-C, 6GB RAM, 64/128GB storage. They clearly went all out with the Zero 5/5 Pro. It was the phone to beat among mobile brands popular in Nigeria (Tecno, Infinix, Gionee). Arguably, this is why the just released Zero 6 can’t be much more.

Unveiled at a media launch in Lagos, Nigeria, the Infinix Zero 6–nicknamed #theintelligentmasterpiece, would replace the 5 as their Flagship device. To start with, some Key Features:

  • Display: 6.2-inches IPS FHD+ 1080 x 2160 pixels, 400 Pixels Per Inch
  • Processor Type: Octa-core Snapdragon 642 with Adreno 509
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Storage: 64GB internal storage, expandable via microSD card slot
  • Back Camera: primary 12MP + secondary 24MP, with dual-LED flash
  • Front Camera: 20MP with f/2.0 aperture
  • Battery: Non-removable Li-Ion 3570mAh with Xcharge for fast charging
  • Price: 105,000NGN

Display and Aesthetics

For the display, we’re getting a 6.2-inch IPS all-screen display panel. A notch houses the front camera and proximity sensor, bringing the screen-body ratio to 83%. It’s also a FHD 1080 x 2160p panel with a pixel density of 400ppi. All of this means you get a quite vivid viewing experience.

Zero 6 Display and Back glass

The Zero 6 rocks a more modern, notched design. With this release it’s clear Infinix is sold on notched phones and are presenting the design across all their devices. It looks clean with a moderate chin and thin bezels on the side. Infinix has also placed a layer of glass at the back and the color gradient option makes it look stunning while reflecting off light. Both the front and back glass are Gorilla Glass series. Although there’s no official statement on what versions just yet. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the back.

It’s exact dimensions are 156.8 x 75.9 x 7.95mm

Cameras

The Zero series are well known for their impressive cameras down the line. And the Zero 6 does not miss out on that neither. Around back, there’s a solid Dual-camera setup. The primary lens is a 12MP shooter with Fast Focus, alongside a 24MP low-light performance lens and a True-tone Quad-LED flash. The rear cameras are capable of shooting Video in a stunning 4K resolution. Albeit at a mediocre 30fps.

Zero 6 AI Camera

On the front there’s a 20MP AI camera. The AI features includes Face ID, software Portrait mode, scene detection and other advanced enhancements. It can also capture video in 1080p at 60fps.

Performance and Storage

Under the hood, we’re getting 6GB of RAM and a respectable 64GB storage, which are the exact memory specifications of the older Zero 5. Nonetheless, 6GB is still enough RAM to crush everyday tasks and the 64GB of storage means you won’t be too hasty to expand your storage—which you can, by the way, up to an additional 128GB.

The Zero 6 is also Powered by a Snapdragon 624; an Octa-core chip clocked at 2.2Ghz. Alongside an Adreno 509 GPU for graphics. Not bad at all. Snappier than it’s predecessor at least. Normal to fairly heavy use should be a breeze. Mobile gamers would love this one.

Thus, it feels like Infinix missed out on software. Android 9–Android’s latest and greatest—would have definitely run smoothly on this device. Or, it would have also been a great candidate for Android One. On the contrary however, the Infinix Zero 6 ships with Android 8.1. Come on Infinix, that’s so last year. Hopefully they’d release updates Over The Air.

Others

The Zero 6 has a Dual Nano Sim support. And allows SD card storage expansion up to 128GB. There’s 4G support—as expected, WiFi (WLAN)IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and even Bluetooth 5 as well—a very welcome upgrade by the way. As with the Zero 5, the port is a more modern USB-C rather than the traditional micro USB. With, of course, OTG support. And yes, there’s a headphone jack.

Disappointingly, the Zero 6 sports a smaller capacity battery than the Zero 5. It’s rated 3,750mAh while the previous Zero 5 was 4,350. However, the 6 could still achieve even better battery life over the Zero 5 from software optimization and more efficient hardware—perhaps trumping the need for a bigger battery. The Zero 6 is expected to launch at 105,000NGN and the Zero 6 Pro would cost 116,000NGN.

Verdict

From the Features above, it’s pretty clear not much could be improved upon the Zero 6’s predecessor. In fact, the 6 seems more like a design refresh over the Zero 5—like an attempt to bring a modern feel to the series. At it’s launch price however, I’d definitely consider getting the now cheaper Zero 5.
