Is Apple Bringing back Fingerprint Scanners

Qualcomm finally launched their Ultrasonic on-screen fingerprint reader (Sense ID). This came after synaptics also announced an on-screen fingerprint reader. However, the difference here is Synaptics’ is an optical sensor while Qualcomms’ is an Ultrasonic one. Hence it’s more secure and much faster.

Patently Apple recently revealed Apple may just be looking to adopt this Technology in their products. This doesn’t come as a surprise as they already filed a patent since August concerning in-display fingerprint readers. It seems Apple will implement this Technology. Most probably in their budget iPads if they have any planned for March next year. Apple would want to match the design of all their iPad models. And Qualcomm’s Fingerprint Technology would be the best (low cost) way to go about that

Besides, even the budget iPhone XR has switched to an all screen display. It’s no surprise they’d want to Streamline the experience across the board. Budget iPads seems to have become a thing for Apple. Therefore it just may be getting a refresh. And I think Apple’s finally done with the home button. Using an in-display Fingerprint sensor is one way to go about it. That or keeping Face ID.

Arguably, the budget model of the iPhone shipped with the sophisticated Face ID technology. But how’s that doing in the market? (hint: low sales figures and contemplated price cuts). Qualcomm’s solution is a cheaper option, and almost as dependable. I see no better Authentication replacement for the home button. Eventually, we may see Apple offer this up in iPhones. Either alongside Face ID to give users true variety, or on lower end models to further cut costs.

Samsung is reportedly shipping with the same in-display sensors for their 10th Anniversary phone. Check out all even news and rumors and news surrounding it here
