Here’s why the Pixel 3a is worth buying

The Google Pixel is a line of Smartphones that have excelled in two major areas; Camera, and Software. Matter of fact, the Pixels have the best Android Software Experience as well as the Industry-Best Camera overall.

Super Res Zoom
An extra, Telephoto lens is often required for lossless zoom. But the single Pixel Camera manages it just fine.

Their last year’s offering, the Pixel 3 (read about it here), still stands as the Camera champ among even the competition from this year. Fun fact, it does most things phones with dual and even triple cameras can do (like blur effects and lossless zoom)–with just a single one.

However, the Pixel 3 wasn’t cheap. And save for it’s amazing Camera and Stock Android experience, it really didn’t have much else going for it. And there was doubts concerning how it would hold up over time. In summary, Google, similar to most Smartphone Manufacturers in 2018, couldn’t justify it’s $1000 price tag, so the Pixel 3 wasn’t selling very well–Despite heavy price cuts. And unlike other Smartphone Makers, they didn’t have a cheaper, more reasonable model, like the iPhone XR and Galaxy S10e.

ENTERS A SOLUTION

To understand the brilliance in the Pixel 3a, let’s take a look at the current “budget” Smartphones and “Flagship Killers”. These are Smartphones that pack high-end features (lots of RAM, Storage, CPU), and sell them at half the price of more Reputable or Popular Flagship models (like Samsung’s S10 and iPhone XS). Companies like OnePlus and phones like the Pocofone F1 are popular examples.

However, there’s a trend among these “Flagship Killer” models. Contrary to the killer specs, they often sacrifice on either Design, Display Quality, Cameras, or all three. Meaning you have a very Powerful Phone with a terrible or just average camera, a poor display and/or design.

The Pixel 3a comes in a regular and Plus sized variant

With the Pixel 3a, it’s the opposite. It delivers on the Pixel’s major strengths (Camera and Software) and packs in average performance (4GB RAM+Snapdragon 660 Processor). Sure the Processor is a bit dated, but there’s got to be a reason to upgrade next year, don’t you think?

Google boasts that the Pixel Camera can see in the Dark

Thing is, 2019 is just not a time when high-end features are enough to spend $1000 on. But how about a great camera, Stock Android, a beautiful OLED Display, Stereo Speakers, but just okay performance. And all that for $400.

Now you may be thinking, that’s still not cheap. $400 can get you even better deals in 2019, after-all. But when you remember this is still the best Android experience out there. And is still, indeed, the best Smartphone camera, that asking price (which is less than half the price of the original Pixel 3) doesn’t seem too bad.

Google must have had to do a lot of pondering on how to put more of their phones into more users hands. Especially in a time when more and more people just don’t see the need for an upgrade. The Pixel 3a manages to capture most of what users love in Industry-best standards. Then packs in a just-above-average spec sheet alongside. They are hoping this will be enough reason to pick up the Pixel 3a. And I believe it is.
