When in truth, most people really didn&#8217;t mind that bezel strip at the top and bottom of their phones. Not until we were convinced it was an eye-sore by the same companies trying to sell newer, shinier products each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the need for an all screen display, smartphone manufacturers found really useful ways to utilize the bezels on a phone; Multiple front cameras, front-firing stereo speakers, navigational buttons, fingerprint scanners. So while some would call smartphones with bezels &#8220;dated&#8221;, they&#8217;re actually just &#8220;practical&#8221;. Even from an aesthetics standpoint, notches have actually made <a href=\"https:\/\/techrant.blog\/google-pixel-3-and-3xl-nice-or-notch\/\">some phones<\/a> really ugly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- Link I, Responsive -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4883052312808999\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9573741801\"\n     data-ad-format=\"link\"\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Samsung, for instance, had this figured out\u2014At least for a while. Rather than switch over to a Notched display to house their cameras and speaker array, they focused on slimming the bezels of their phones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/techrant.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/img_1376.png\" alt=\"Trimmed bezels on the Galaxy S9\" class=\"wp-image-999\" width=\"533\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/techrant.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/img_1376.png 711w, https:\/\/techrant.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/img_1376-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><figcaption>Trimmed bezels on the Galaxy S9<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Galaxy S9, for instance, had non-existent side bezels and the top and bottom bezels had been significantly reduced. Paired with their stunning QHD AMOLED display, I didn&#8217;t think that phone was any less of an all screen display than notched phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matter of fact, reverse seemed to be the case. The way I see it, Notched phones were anything but an all screen display. Literally having an area that blocks out actual content. With a notch, and whichever kind, a percentage of your actual display is taken up by hardware. And that&#8217;s an all-screen display?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/techrant.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/23ef2842-d53d-402d-9b51-a8faa7436a2c.jpeg\" alt=\"The iPhone X\u2019s notch clearly blocking out content\" class=\"wp-image-1971\" width=\"598\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/techrant.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/23ef2842-d53d-402d-9b51-a8faa7436a2c.jpeg 598w, https:\/\/techrant.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/23ef2842-d53d-402d-9b51-a8faa7436a2c-300x219.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><figcaption>Well that\u2019s dumb<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, while having top and bottom bezels seems somewhat unsightly in 2019, it doesn&#8217;t get in the way of of your content. Whether it\u2019s a 4 or 6-inch screen, content took up 100% of your actual display. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Samsung, they finally went for a cut-out camera. Sure it wasn\u2019t a full sized notch, but did they really have to? I mean what really do they achieve moving the camera off-center besides good looks. It looks okay on the Galaxy S10 and S10e. So I could rant all day about how unnecessary that is, but in truth, smartphone companies must try to achieve a cleaner, more modern feel to stay in the competition. Besides; shinier, fancier phones are the main reason you\u2019d upgrade your phone yearly.
